Custom Stained Glass Transoms Let More Light Into a Home

Transom windows are a popular architectural feature that adds aesthetic appeal to a home, but also serves a much more important purpose: letting more light into the space. This can lighten up a dark corner, make a room seem brighter and more spacious, and even allow for more airflow and light moving through the interior of a house. Perhaps you’ve never really noticed transoms, but they have been in use for centuries. And once upon a time, many transoms were made of stained glass, for extra added aesthetic appeal.

Transom stained glass windows are windows that rest above a door or above other windows to provide more light. They usually do not open, but sometimes they do. The kind of transom you’d be most familiar with is either the rectangular or half-moon shaped pane of glass right over your front door, in your home’s entryway.

When an entryway has two sidelights and a transom, a matched set of custom stained glass panels gives the entire entrance a polished, luxe look.

But what if you’d like more light either in your home’s entrance, or in any of the other rooms? What if you’d love to include some stained glass, but don’t actually want it in the regular, opening and closing style windows? Those are both great reasons to add transoms.

If you have a row of small windows in an older home, perhaps in the living room or dining room, transom windows can be installed right above them—of course using custom stained glass instead of just the usual clear glass.

Creating custom stained glass transoms is an engaging process that our clients tell us they really enjoy. Here’s how it would work: you’d make an appointment with one of our designers, who would arrive at your residence (depending on area) with many samples of the various designs we have available. Now, of course you can choose from our existing designs, and the pattern will be custom fit to the exact measurements of your transom window. But you can also work with us to create your own unique design.

At that point, the rest of our team swings into action, creating a computer pattern, ordering the materials, and assembling your custom stained glass transom window. Did you know that all our artisans are specially trained, use the highest quality and most modern materials, but still build each and every stained glass panel by hand. Piece by piece, bit by bit, until it’s assembled, soldered, polished, and ready to install in your home.

If you’ve been wanting more light but had resigned yourself to not having it, please consider the installation of custom stained glass transoms. We think you’ll be delighted! Contact us today for more information.
